T’ai Chi Ch’uan: A Simplified Method of Calisthenics for Health & Self Defense

Or anything by Cheng Man-ch’ing

Chen Man Cing’s books are great sources of how to do the Tai Chi movements as well as philosophy and principles. The most in depth book for the latter is his Thirteen Treatises on Tai Chi Chuan  – this is for Advanced or dedicated students and details all the levels of Tai Chi that you can attain.

The Tai Chi book: refining and enjoying a lifetime of practice

by Robert Chuckrow

I have only recently come across the book – it is almost an encyclopedia of information and covers everything you need to know including the short form postures. A good book if you only bought one book.

There are no secrets

by Wolfe Lowenthal

This is one of my favourite books as it is full of anecdotal stories about Chen Man Ching but also cleverly, about all the Classic principles of Tai Chi. A must read for anyone interested in what our art is.

Tai Chi Ch’Uan for Health and Self-Defense: Philosophy and Practice

By T T Liang

Again for me, this is a must have book written by the wonderful T T Liang, student of Chen Man Ching and Master in his own right. All the classic principles and philosophy, well written, full of advice from someone whose life began at Seventy!

The Essence of T’ai Chi Ch’uan: The Literary Tradition

By Lo, Inn, Amacker & Foe

This is the Tai Chi classics in it’s simplest form, a must have for any serious student to read and read again. The hand is not a hand; the whole body is hand!

T’ai-chi Touchstones: Yang Family Secret Transmissions

Complied by Douglas Wile

This book is a look at the Tai Chi classics and more – every read seems to deepen understanding. A good book for the serious student and practitioner.

My teacher is called Angus Clark and he has a great DVD called Tai Chi with Angus Clark.  This is readily available or you can check it out for free on his YouTube channel.
